Learn From Our Enemies Especially

If we learn to open our hearts, anyone, including the people who drive us crazy, can be our teacher.

Pema Chodron

This is SO true.
It is easy to open our hearts to those who are like us, agree with us and love us back. However, the real lessons come when we open our hearts to our enemies. Jesus said to love your enemy and to turn the other cheek. Our "enemies" teach us some of your most important lessons. We should try and learn to look at people who annoy us and anger us as people sent to us via our own karma to teach us a vital lesson. It's like lifting weights which cause our muscles pain. That is when you gain the most muscle.

I think you/Pema are quite right. Makes me happy to know that I have added to many people's muscle mass.

I wonder if a corollary to the sentiments of your words is true. Do you think that maybe some of our well-intentioned friends/lovers/family are like chocolate ice cream, making us fat and lazy with self satisfaction?

I think you are right on the corollary. Well-intentioned people in our lives can indeed make us fat and lazy with self-satisfaction. That is an excellent post. They are too reassuring and sweet and so we become fat and lazy and drunk with pleasure so to speak.

Once again I think it comes back to finding that Taoist balance in all things.

Well said.
